Athens Riots 2008

Bits of broken marble and bitter orange that have been previously thrown to the riot police lying in front of the presidetinal ceremonial guard in front of the Greek parliament.

Following the murder of a 15 year old boy, Alexandros Grigoropoulos, by a policeman on 6 December 2008 widespread riots, protests and unrest followed lasting for several weeks and spreading beyond the capital and even overseas

When I walked in the streets of my town the day after the riots I instantly forgot the image I had about Athens, that of a bustling, peaceful, energetic metropolis and in my mind came the old photographs from WWII, the civil war and the students uprising against the dictatorship.

Thus I decided not to turn my digital camera straight to the destroyed buildings but to photograph through an old camera that worked as a filter, a barrier between me and the city.
